Bad Breath (Halitosis)

In most cases, the cause of bad breath can be simple. However, if the issue is persistent, it can be a symptom of something more serious, and a problem sign of something to avoid long term.

  • Diet places a key role in bad breath, and the food you eat can often affect the smell of your breath.
  • Oral bacteria can cause an odour, and also indicate you have plaque build-up.
  • Dry mouth often affects your breath, as saliva (or lack thereof) affects plaque buildup and food particles from sticking to your teeth. Read more about dry mouth on the dry mouth page.
  • Smoking.
  • Unclean dentures. Just like teeth, dentures need to be cleaned regularly to keep them feeling, and smelling, fresh.
  • Some medical conditions, often affecting your liver or kidneys, can affect your breath. Alerting your dentist of previous medical conditions, or current medications is always a good idea.

Prevention Dentistry with Laser Scanners

Laser Scanner Finds Cavities at Their Beginning Stages

Perhaps in the past, you have scheduled regular visits to a dentist to take care of any cavity development when it is still small. At one of those visits, you are in disbelief that the dentist is telling you there is a large cavity in one of your teeth. How did this happen? The cavity was there six months earlier, it just wasn't identified. Often, very small cavities do not show up on X-rays or are not apparent with visual examination.

With the Laser Scanner, we can detect cavities when they are just beginning so our doctor can remove the decay and restore it with a very small, invisible filling. Use of this high-tech tool also provides accuracy in treatment and eliminates any unnecessary procedures.

Dental Relief with Proper Bite Alignment

Proper Bite Alignment to Relieve Pain and Discomfort

A bite that does not come together properly (dental occlusion) is often the cause of headaches, pain in the shoulder, neck, and jaws, and aching or popping jaws. There are a variety of reasons why your jaw does not rest in a relaxed position. The way your permanent teeth grew in, trauma or disease to the mouth, and wear and tear on your teeth can all have an effect on how your teeth come together.

This imbalance causes tension and pain in the adjoining muscles. As years go by, many patients grow used to living with this pain. But you don't have to put up with it any longer. We can restore your bite to its proper position with a full-mouth rehabilitation. We recommend you discover what this treatment can do for you to add a new quality and energy to your life.

Dysphagia (Trouble Swallowing)

Those suffering from dysphagia, or trouble swallowing, can reduce their risk of chest infection or other serious issues by maintaining good oral health by keeping their mouth clean. Other medical issues include neuromuscular conditions, stroke, dementia, traumatic brain injury, gastroesophageal reflux disease, cancers of the head and neck and certain respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Aspiration pneumonia can also be caused when saliva, food or liquid goes down the trachea into the lungs, instead of the esophagus and into the stomach.

Risk of dysphagia increases with age and frailty, as well as smoking, excessive alcohol use, certain medications and poor oral hygiene including your teeth and dentures.
